Horse Play Rentals offers an after-school program for children ages 7 years and older. This program focuses on basic horsemanship skills such as: grooming, haltering, leading, saddling, bridling, and horse health. We will have an introduction to Western riding and the aids that are associated with it. This program will build on itself and each day will be filled with learning, fun, and safety. We will prepare you to be able to care for your own horse, take lessons, or continue in some aspect of the horse industry.
The program is held Monday or Friday from 4pm-6pm. The cost is $45.00 a class and must be purchased for an entire month at a time of reservation, (total cost $180.00). Students will need to start in prviate lessons until an HPR instructor feels they are ready to join a class. The sessions continue throughout the school year.

Horse Play Therapy Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a short-term, collaborative effort between a psychotherapist and a horse professional.  The primary goal of EAP is to generate positive engagement with clients utilizing an experimental and animal-based treatment modality.  The psychotherapist and equine specialist work together in planning a safe treatment session for the safety of the client and horse alike.  The modality is closely related to Gestalt therapy in that a basic tool of the therapy is the use of body language.  EAP is an experimental approach to psychotherapy based on the use of metaphors or illustrative symbolism.
A basic goal of EAP is to encourage client insight through horse examples.  Horses have a variety of characteristics that are similar to humans, and they respond to non-verbal behavior of the human interacting with them.  Individuals are often unaware of their behavior until they can understand it through the way in which the horse reflects it back to them.  Working with the horse supports and encourages the identification and expression of such reflections and feelings.  Interventions or activities are planned around the concept of the horse’s reflective behavior.  Interventions are tailored to each individual and their needs as assessed by the psychotherapist and the child and/or parent.
Dr. Carole Harris, a licensed clinical social worker with a doctorate in psychology, works exclusively with two Equine Specialists, Marissa Walker and Robyn Lee Ann.  Their EAP program is located at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center in Huntington Beach, CA.  Dr. Harris provides a Teen Horse Camp several weeks in the summer.  This teen camp provides the opportunity for the teenager to build self-esteem, confidence, learn leadership and positive coping skills, as well as learning horsemanship skills through developing a relationship with the horse.
